WHO WE ARE

MATT Architecture is an award-winning studio of architects and designers based in the heart of London’s glittering West End, Leicester Square.

Our approach seeks to combine our senior partners’ decades of experience creating some of the world’s most celebrated buildings with the ambition and freshness of a young company.

Regardless of scale, each project is carefully considered through all stages to create well-crafted, robust and enjoyable buildings that maximise the opportunities provided by the site and brief.

Matt White

Director

Matt White established MATT Architecture in 2011.

He began his career at Foster and Partners in Hong Kong in 1994, working on the Chek Lap Kok airport project, before returning to the London office in 2004.

Matt became one of the original partners at Make Architects and the Principal of the Abu Dhabi and Dubai offices — which he set–up from scratch in the UAE in 2009 — and he was also responsible for the practice’s first completed building, an award-winning community judo club in Dartford which was the home of the British Olympic Judo Team for London 2012.

Matt studied for his Diploma of Architecture at Edinburgh University. Preceding this he took his Bachelor's degree at Manchester University.

DESIGN METHODS

Our work methodology comprises traditional and state-of-the-art techniques to explore the potential of all design options. This combines theories and tools in digital and physical modelling.

'Making' is central to MATT Architecture's design approach and includes anything from rough hand-made cardboard study models - through to more polished digital techniques including 3D printing, laser cutting and CNC fabrication. 'Real' models are used alongside both VR and AR digital models to explore and communicate design and construction issues.

Pushing the boundaries of massing and materiality, while rigorously testing the context and understanding the requirements of the planning process is at the heart of our design values.

As a result, we produce dynamic 2D and 3D conceptual visualisations and models ready to be transformed into well-thought-out functional spaces.

SUSTAINABILITY

MATT Architecture is an architectural practice that endeavours to leave a space better than how it was found. By complying with the ISO 14001: 2015, we are continually engaged with improving our environmental strategies and aspirations to allow us to deliver professional services of the highest standards. We are committed to achieving environmental best practice throughout our business activities wherever this is practicable.

We believe that the health, well-being, and productivity of our communities are just as important as reducing embodied carbon in our buildings to achieve sustainable built environments. Due consideration should be given to the topic during the design and delivery of our projects.

Our approach to meeting the net zero target by 2050 is retrofitting existing buildings. By sympathetically transforming them into adaptable structures, we enhance performance and functionality, while extending their life cycle to minimise the negative environmental impact.
